Welcome to Chemnitz

Villa Esche

Welcome to the more than 800 year old city of Chemnitz and to the Günnewig Hotel Chemnitzer Hof, built in 1930 to the plans of the architect Heinrich Straumer in the Bauhaus style. The hotel is situated on the theatre square surrounded by many architecturally interesting buildings like the Petri church, the opera house and the König-Albert-Museum. Chemnitz is the third largest city in Saxony and surprises the visitor with its rich cultural heritage. This is the starting point to explore the scenery and splendour of the nearby Erz mountain range. The oldest landmark of the city is the Red Tower, which was built in the 12th century. The inner city was rebuilt in parts and the contemporary architecture blends in very well with the historic buildings of the 15th century.

Whether it is traditional, renaissance, art nouveau or industrial architecture you are after, you can see it all in Chemnitz. Visit the Villa Esche, designed and decorated by the Belgian artist Henry van de Velde. This Villa is a monument to European architecture and is one of Chemnitz’ finest buildings. For more information about Villa Esche.

The König-Albert-Museum houses the art collection: „Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz“ with its fine examples of paintings, sculptures, textile art and handy craft with its frequently varying national and international exhibitions. Amongst this extensive collection are 300 works of art by Schmidt Rottluffs. More information about Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz.

The Chemnitz Opera house achieved world wide fame with its production of “The ring of the Nibelungen”. The opera house offers music lovers an attractive and diverse repertoire of operas, operettas, musicals and ballet performances. More information about the Chemnitzer Oper.

Museum Gunzenhauser

Since the opening of the “Museum Gunzenhauser” on 01. December 2007 the visitors will enjoy significant works of the Classical Modern and of the second half of the 20th century. In 2003 the Munich gallery owner Dr. Alfred Gunzenhauser donated his private collection for the foundation of this museum. Among the paintings are 290 works of Otto Dix, one of the world's greatest collections, the second largest collection of paintings of Alexej von Jawlensky in Europe in addition to works of Gabriele Münter, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Conrad Felixmüller, Willi Baumeister, Serge Poliakoff, Bernhard Schultze, Emil Schumacher and many other famous artists. More information about the "Museum Gunzenhauser".

Visitors to the Industrial Museum will enjoy the exhibit's recording of 200 years of industrial development and achievements that have formed modern society. The Chemnitz Arena with its sporting and cultural programmes is well worth a visit as well as the “Galerie Oben”, which is a traditional gallery in Chemnitz, and the mall “DAStietz”, a collection of museums, shops and art galleries. For sportive activities we recommend the golf course of the Golfclub Chemnitz/Wasserschloss Klaffenbach in the vicinity. The 18-hole competition course is imbedded in the picturesque hills of the "Vorerzgebirge". The course appeals to the demanding handicap enthusiasts as well as to beginners. Both will be equally impressed by its beauty and sophistication.
